Security Co-op at Tatarsky.com

The Security Co-op

Tatarsky.com performs a considerable level of security research. While the bulk of those efforts are handled via other relationships, as part of that research Tatarsky.com has devoted a considerable effort to helping individuals and very small businesses with security problems. In particular Tatarsky.com tries to "de-bot" its friends and neighbors and local small businesses as part of charity efforts.

In particular Tatarsky.com has noticed a lack of a reasonable solution that scales for Windows Anti-Virus management for individuals, charities or such very small 1-2 person businesses. So, lacking a solid open source anti-virus solution (currently, Tatarsky.com closely watches the Clam Win project based on the ClamAV product) we have purchased a batch of the McAfee Small Business anti-virus licenses.

It should be clearly stated there are "free" anti-virus solutions available under varying license agreements on the Internet. This is not an endorsement of not attempting to use those solutions. However, for the individuals found in various states of severe compromise, Tatarsky.com was comfortable with the solution in question to return them to functionality.

Currently the Security Co-op is invitation only and usually follows some form of personal computer disaster. The user is added to our security console and is monitored for problems on an ad-hoc basis by Paul Tatarsky. The main goal of the Co-op is to gather additional security data from its members in hopes of furthering efforts to secure the Internet. Privacy is strictly respected.

Additionally, Tatarsky.com as part of its general open source software efforts will strongly recommend a home firewall solution and will for a nominal fee assist in the deployment of such a solution. Tatarsky.com strongly recommends a firewall based on the open source pfSense project. While slightly more expensive in terms of needed hardware, the pfSense firewall is a very secure and well designed solution.

Alternatively, there are zillions of small firewall platforms available for home and small business use and Tatarsky.com will point you at the nearest purveyor of such solutions.

Tatarsky.com deploys pfSense firewalls on small mini-ITX systems which is discussed further in our Mini-ITX pages
